President Donald Trump signed an order on national television last night to re-open the government following his 43 day Republican shutdown, which resulted in no major legislative wins for Republicans, and handed Democrats momentum heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
During his near-slurring speech last night, Trump falsely characterized the shutdown as being a product of Democrat members of Congress, despite the fact that Trump Republicans control both houses of Congress.
Within the first minute of his speech the President hurled blatant lies at the American people, saying, “The Democrats tried to extort our country.”
Trump ignored the fact that his own Party controls both houses of the legislature, and has yet to pass any meaningful legislation besides a tax cut for the wealthiest of Americans, almost mirroring what Trump and his Republicans allies “accomplished” during his first term.
It seems that this President and his Republicans are only capable of passing legislation to slash the taxes of their wealthy donors, and themselves. They are unable to pass meaningful healthcare legislation, or even really draft a coherent plan to help Americans struggling to afford their healthcare.
They are incapable of passing meaningful legislation to rebuild roads, bridges, hospitals, and other important and crumbling aspects of our critical infrastructure. They are unable to craft any bills to help our veterans get better access to the care they were promised.
They are incapable of doing anything to lower soaring prices, which they campaigned on in 2024, claiming that the boogeyman Joe Biden was causing all of the problems. It turns out, Trump isn’t a ‘masterful economic builder.’
His ‘success’ in the first term simply had nothing to do with his policies, because when it comes down to actual, real policy present in actual legislation, Trump underwhelms. There really isn’t any policy there. He’s just winging it.
What ends up happening, as we’ve seen time and time again, is that the nefarious, war-hungry, anti-American GOP establishment, which lurks behind every elected Republican, make decisions on crucial policy from nameless desks, and unsaid positions, while Trump is appeased with near child-like trinkets and toys.
It was reported just this week that Swiss watchmakers hoping to get a sweetheart deal on import tariffs gifted Trump a solid gold bar. Just after this news broke it was also announced that Switzerland and the United States are nearing a trade deal.
Do sweetheart deals on luxury watches help Americans in the slightest? No. What exactly is ‘America First’ about cronyism?
Here are the President’s full remarks from last night,
Trump: Thank you very much everybody. We just signed the bill to reopen the government. It’s a great day for our country. A lot of people worked very hard. Some people didn’t want to do it the easy way, they wanted to do it the hard way, and now they look very foolish. The Democrats look very bad right now, very, very bad. They shut down the government over things that had nothing to do with the budget. But we got it done.
Reporter: “Mr. President, will you commit there will be no more shutdowns this year?”
Trump: “We’re going to have a very smooth process from now on. I think everybody learned a lesson. I’m willing to work with anybody, Democrats, Republicans, independents. We’re going to get healthcare fixed, we’re going to get the border fixed, we’re going to get a lot of things fixed. Here it is, fully signed. Beautiful signature if I say so myself. Government is open, paychecks are coming, parks are open, everything is open. And we didn’t give in to their ridiculous demands. We won.
I want to thank Mike Johnson, thank Leader Thune, thank all of the great Republicans who stuck together 100%. A few Democrats came along at the end when they realized how bad it looked for them. But mostly it was Republican unity that got this done. Tremendous unity. Absolute victory. Total victory. The American people won. The radical Democrats lost. They tried to hold the government hostage and the American people said no. And now we move forward, bigger and better than ever. So enjoy your paychecks, federal workers – great people, many of them voted for me, I know that. Back to work tomorrow. We love you. And we’re going to make America greater than ever before. Thank you everybody.
The President’s cronies then shuffled the press out of the room quickly without really taking any serious questions from reporters.
As Trump continues to boast about his record, the numbers say otherwise. President Trump remains one of the most unpopular Presidents in modern American history.
Trump Approval Rating Slips To 36%
President Donald Trump’s approval rating in the AP NORC poll showed an approval rating of just 36%, one of the lowest numbers ever recorded in modern American history. That same poll showed that a whopping 63% of Americans disapprove of the President.
Trump’s slippage in the ratings is nothing new, as he consistently polled in the 30s and 40s during his first term.
It remains to be seen how things will shake out, but if Trump’s unpopularity continues to gain momentum, 2026 will most likely be a very bad year for Republicans around America.
